Throwaway addresses show as risky with "Disposable (throwaway) email domain" in the Why column. The full report CSV has a disposable column you can filter on.
What is a disposable email address?
A disposable (or throwaway, or temporary) address is an inbox that anyone can use without signing up, usually for a few minutes. People use them to get past a signup form, grab a free download or a trial, and never come back.
The address is real for a short time, so a confirmation email may even arrive. After that, the inbox is deleted or shared with everyone who types the same name. Nobody is reading your emails there.
Why they hurt your list
- No reader. Every email you send there is wasted, and it drags down your open and click rates.
- Bounces later. Many throwaway inboxes stop accepting mail after a while. Those bounces count against your sender reputation.
- Fake signups. Free trials, coupons and referral rewards claimed with throwaway addresses are a common kind of abuse.
- Wrong numbers. Your subscriber or user count looks bigger than it is.
How this checker works
BounceLens compares each domain with a list of 8,966 known throwaway domains from the open-source disposable-email-domains project. Subdomains count too: [email protected] is caught because mailinator.com is on the list.
In the same run it also checks the format, whether the domain exists and has a mail server, typos like gmial.com, and duplicates. So one pass cleans more than just the throwaway addresses.
What it won't catch
- Brand-new throwaway services that aren't on the list yet. New ones appear every month.
- Email forwarding and alias services like Apple's Hide My Email, Firefox Relay or DuckDuckGo addresses. These forward to a real person's inbox, so they are not treated as throwaway. BounceLens shows the provider (e.g. "DuckDuckGo relay") so you can decide.
- Fake addresses at real providers.
[email protected]uses a real domain. Only a mailbox check can tell whether that inbox exists.
Blocking throwaway addresses on your own site
If you'd rather stop them at the signup form than clean them out later, the same check is available for your site, for free:
- Craft CMS plugin for user registration and the Contact Form plugin
- Joomla plugin for registration, contact and profile forms
- A free API:
https://bouncelens.com/api/[email protected]returns JSON with"disposable": true
Questions
Is Gmail or Outlook a disposable email?
No. Gmail, Outlook.com, Yahoo and similar are free providers, not throwaway services: people keep those inboxes for years. The report marks them in a separate free column in case you only want work addresses.
Should I delete every disposable address?
For a newsletter or a marketing list, yes. Nobody reads those inboxes. For a support system or orders, you may want to keep them for that one conversation and just leave them out of your mailing list.
Is it really free?
Yes, with no signup and no limits. The check runs in your browser, so it costs us nothing to run.
